UK Advisory body issues rapid response on psychedelics for anxiety

The UK’s independent Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST) has issued a rapid response on psychedelic-assisted therapy for anxiety disorders.

The response follows increasing research around psychedelics that shows the compounds may hold promise as innovative treatments in the area of mental health.

Dr. Shoona Vincent, Vice President of Clinical Science at MAC Clinical Research and an experienced leader in the establishment of psychedelic studies, offers insight on the latest developments:

“At MAC we have seen a rise in the number of clinical trials investigating psychedelics for the treatment of mental health conditions. With the exponential rise in interest, the UK’s Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology has published a rapid response in a bid to elucidate the topic for policymakers.

We are delighted to see that the UK government recognises the huge benefits of psychedelics for mental health disorders; these innovative therapies are urgently required and may improve significantly upon current treatments.

There is a huge amount of evidence presented in the rapid response to ensure safe access to these treatments within the NHS. The MAC team and I hope that both Houses of Parliament can see the benefits,  and that the UK can follow the Australia model by changing the classification of psilocybin and MDMA to enable prescribing by authorised psychiatrists.”

The rapid response covers psychedelics for anxiety, including treatment options for anxiety disorders, lifestyle factors, psychological treatments (psychotherapy), and more.
